A Summer Day in LA with Mary Matson

A photo of Mary’s artwork from her studio.

Summer is kicking off, and what better way to celebrate the season than by spending a day with our friend Mary Matson?

Last year we collaborated with Mary on a collection of fabrics and wallpapers inspired by her joyful artwork and illustrations. Her work has a way of bringing sunshine into everyday spaces, capturing the beauty of travel, art, food, and the small moments that make life special.

We asked Mary to share some of her favorite places, routines, and inspirations around Los Angeles—from morning coffee stops to her go-to spots for people watching. We hope you’ll enjoy this insider’s guide to a perfectly Mary Matson day and discover a few ideas to add to your own Los Angeles wish list!

One of Mary’s favorite local haunts, Gjusta.

Temple Studio: Where do you go for a morning coffee and pastry?
Mary Matson: Gjusta. I like to drop in every week or so and pick up bread, pastry and / or my favorite smoked salmon plate. It's a staple and I never leave empty handed.

Some fabulous finds at Gjusta Goods.

Which parks, trails, or neighborhoods are your favorites for a stroll or a hike?
I always love a day of exploring South Bay, particularly Redondo Beach and Palos Verdes. In the summer, I like to layout and draw people. It's also a great area to bike and walk. One of my favorite trails is along the coast where you can explore tide pools and get a bit lost. There’s just lots of variety and things to do.

What is your favorite people watching spot?
The Santa Monica Farmers Market on Wednesdays. The looks never disappoint all year round.

What stores do you especially like to visit?
Tortoise General Store for housewares, it’s also great for gifts. Merrihew’s Sunset Gardens is my local garden spot. It's pretty magical.

Any lunch spots that you love?
Jus’ Poke in Redondo Beach. It’s super fresh, authentic, Hawaiian poke. It's popular but the line moves fast. It's a few blocks to the beach where you can eat at the best dining room in town. Worth it.

What are your go to art galleries or museums to visit?
LACMA is great. I’m so thankful to have the new space open to explore. The Adler/Smith Gallery is a small local spot focusing on surfing and skating. They’ve had some great shows.

What’s the best bar to meet friends for a cocktail?
Gilbert’s El Indio Restaurant for margaritas and chips. My friends on the east side love it too.

Mary loves to meet up with friends at Gilbert’s El Indio, we hope to meet her there one day too!

Are there any hotels that you recommend to visitors?
The Fairmont. It’s classic and it’s cozy and has great access to Santa Monica. Also famous for the “Fairmont Tree,” the 150 year old Moreton Bay Fig Tree. Planted in the late 1800s, it’s one of the largest and oldest of its kind in the US. It’s so awesome.

Thank you, Mary!
